Quiet Table Guide: Nov 1-7

Scripture for the week: Acts 19:23-41

"And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus and in practically the whole province of Asia. He says that gods made by human hands are no gods at all." — Acts 19:26

‭‭1. Ready Your Heart

Begin with a moment of silence or a short prayer, inviting the Holy Spirit to guide your time together.

2. Read

Slowly read this week’s passage. (Consider reading it out loud or in a different translation each day.)

3. Reflect

What word, phrase, or image stands out to you today? What in your life might the Holy Spirit be drawing your attention to?

4. Respond

How can you allow this word to shape your interactions, decisions, or perspective today?

5. Receive

Spend a few moments in stillness, surrendering your thoughts, plans, and actions to God and resting in the presence of Jesus.

6. Practice: Confess and Wait

This week, take the loss test with you into each day, and practice the two movements of turning from idols: confessing them before the Lord and waiting on him.

Each morning, look over these eight words:

Approval. Achievement. Self-sufficiency. Peace-keeping. Security. Image. Control. Religion.

Ask the Holy Spirit which one has the strongest hold on you today. Don't overthink it. Notice which word your heart lands on.

Then confess it simply: "Lord, I confess that I turn to ______ for what only you can give."

Then wait. Sit in stillness for a few moments and receive what Jesus offers in its place:

Approval: You are loved before you perform.
Achievement: His work is finished.
Self-sufficiency: He carries you.
Peace-keeping: His love for you doesn't depend on keeping everyone happy.
Security: He will never leave you.
Image: You are fully known and still wanted.
Control: He holds what you can't.
Religion: Grace replaces rule-keeping.

If the same word surfaces day after day, that is not failure. It is information. Some idols were built in our earliest years, and they don't come down in a single morning. Confess it again, and wait again.

If you notice fear or anger flare up during the day, pause and ask what it might be guarding. Bring that to the Lord without shame.

At the end of the week, ask yourself one question: What would it look like for Jesus to mess with my business?
